Rain - (Isabel Elena Cortez)
Character: Rain
Physical description: Rain is about 5'3 and rather slight of build. She has long black hair and dark eyes.
History: Rain's mother was sexually assaulted and killed in front of her when she was four years old. She was saved only because the attacker hadn't seen her and because when she'd finally stepped out of the shadows, her mother had screamed to her to run - to go hide out in the woods and not let anyone find her. She'd done that, finding safety out in the dark of night, hiding even from the calling of familiar voices for almost two days before a neighbor had stumbled over her in the woods. Everyone had thought she had been killed or abducted by whoever had killed her mother. Her father, she knew, was a bit disappointed that she had not been.
She'd already begun to manifest her ability. Her father hated that she would sometimes answer questions before they were voiced, know about a surprise before it happened, or see things that were going to happen; and also irrationally hated her for what had happened to her mother - for not somehow being able to stop it. He hadn't wanted a child, hadn't wanted to share his wife with anyone else, especially not one so… different. He'd tolerated her when his wife was alive, but afterwards he'd barely been able to even look at her. Her abilities made it impossible for her not to know how he felt. He spent most of his time lost in a bottle, eventually losing his job and the house and bouncing them both from shelter to shelter in the Miami area.
Rain, though she wasn't called that yet (she named herself after her vision quest and will occasionally change it to another nature related word for short periods of time), was mostly left to fend for herself, wandering the streets with the other homeless children, learning their myths - stories about how God had fled, about angels hiding in abandoned buildings as they planned battles against demons. Stories about La Llorona and Bloody Mary and about the Blue Lady who protected the homeless children. One of the older boys took her under his wing, protecting her, and discovering how her abilities could be used to help the children. With her along they knew when an area of a store would be un-watched, when the best times were to steal food or clothes or other things they needed, when bad adults were looking for them. She wasn't always liked, but at least she was respected for her usefulness. As she grew older, she became the one to take 'the little ones' under her wing, trying to keep them safe and help them as best she could.
Her father managed to pull himself together enough from time to time to try and get a job, but mostly, they stayed in shelters or on the streets of whatever city they ended up in as he went from place to place doing odd jobs, never staying in any one place very long. She always sought out the elders of whatever place they were in, wanting to hear their stories and myths, mixing them in with the ones she'd already learned. It was from them that she learned to read and write.
She preferred to be outside at night, even on the streets, but she felt most safe when they were in a small place where she could spend the night in the woods under the stars and the moon. Inside left her feeling trapped and scared unless there were lots of doors and windows she could leave open. She often carried talismans with her, things to protect her, even if they didn't make sense even to her. For months she carried two screwdrivers with her everywhere she went - a regular and a Phillips head - so she'd be prepared for anything. Another time she kept a figure of a superhero in her pocket so he could keep her safe. She knew these things didn't make sense, knew they were irrational, knew they made other people think she was crazy, but couldn't make herself stop. And she knew that there was indeed something wrong and broken about her.
When she was a young teen her father caught her fooling around with a boy willing to overlook the fact that she was crazy, and shipped her off to her mother's grandmother up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for almost two years. There she listened to all the stories the elders had to tell and eventually went off on her own Vision Quest. When she returned from it her father was waiting and dragged her off again. At 16 she ran away, scared by the increase in his frightening, outbursts directed at her, and drifted from town to town herself, taking care of the little ones she found on the streets, and trying to find a way to deal with her own brokenness.
Abilities: Rain has some ability to see the outcome of events and a limited ability to hear people's thoughts. For example, she will often absently answer questions before they're asked, thinking the person spoke out loud. She can not go into someone's mind and pull out information and secrets, but she is often able to hear what they are thinking about or feeling in the moment, particularly if the thoughts or emotions are particularly strong or loud. She is also able to look at a situation and somehow 'know' how it can turn out. When she was living on the streets she would know when a shopkeeper was about to turn their back or leave something unattended that she and the other children could take.
She has spent a great deal of her time learning about myths and beliefs from anyone who would sit with her long enough to tell her stories. Her reality testing isn't always the best, so she's not always entirely sure what is myth and what is reality. She relates very strongly to many of the Native American ideas - particularly those of the Lakota.
Somewhere along the way she learned how to do origami and will sometimes create little creatures and give them to people. They're often related to whatever animal she believes they are most like.
Flaws/weaknesses: Rain suffered severe emotional trauma when she was a very young child and never received any help or assistance in dealing with the horror she experienced. She is, quite frankly, not entirely sane and she knows it. Or rather she knows that there is something 'broken' about her mind and she doesn't know how to fix it. In a lot of ways she's much like a young child.
Since she's not always entirely certain whether some of the myths and stories she has read about are true or only legends she sometimes behaves as if it's possible that she might meet the Trickster, The Blue Lady, Grandmother Spider or any of the others she's learned about, right around the next corner. Sometimes she even talks about them as if they are friends she knows and talks with regularly. Other times she's quite aware of what is real and what is not.
Personality: In many ways, Rain's personality is rather childlike. She is kind, generous, open, and naive. She is incredibly curious about everything. She is a generally content person and tries hard to make the best of what she has.
She can be shockingly blunt at times, a combination of being partially stuck back with the social skills of the four year old she was before she was damaged, the time she spent living on the streets, and dealing with a drunken and verbally abusive father. While she has good manners and is generally polite, she can at times behave with both the innocence and lack of social awareness that a very young child has. She often has no filter between what she thinks and what she says - unless she is scared or trying very hard.
She can be very introspective as it is important to her that she try and understand how her mind works - or doesn't work in many cases. And because she knows she's different, she's not easily bothered by what other people say about her. She is who she is and she accepts that. Being told she is crazy or a freak doesn't really phase her unless someone becomes cruel about it. That said, there are times when she can become very sad or pensive about how different and damaged she is. She can also become edgy and upset if kept somewhere she doesn't want to be.
She's very protective of people she sees as younger, littler, or weaker, than she is and won't tolerate others picking on them.

Rain and Topi
"I don't like today," Rain said honestly, curling her body up on bed and wrapping her arms around the pillow. "I want it to be tomorrow now."
"Or maybe..." she turned her head slightly to look at the sky through her clear roof. "Maybe grilled cheese and soup would make me feel better." She sighed and put her head back down. "Except I'm not really hungry."
She rolled over and caught sight of a paper on her bedside table where she'd written, Go out with Topi tonight and sat up right away, eyes brightening. "Oh no, I changed my mind! Today is good!" She slid off the bed and ran across her small house to the bathroom where she brushed her long black hair. "Topi is coming. He's coming here!" She giggled a little and hugged herself. "He likes me and he doesn't care if I'm broken and he wants to go out with me."
Rain had never been on an actual date before and had no idea that some women spent ages getting ready for one. She was in clean jeans and a nice t-shirt - she didn't really own much beyond a couple pairs of each - and she was all washed up with fresh brushed hair. Surely that was enough?
She heard the knock on the front of her house and hurried to let him in. "Topi!" She beamed at him, blushing a little. "Come in!"

She is, quite frankly, not entirely sane and she knows it. Or rather she knows that there is something 'broken' about her mind and she doesn't know how to fix it. She carries different talismans around with her for safety, things that often have meaning only to her. She might insist on carrying two screwdrivers around with her - one regular and one Phillips head - feeling that this way she will be prepared to fix anything that comes up. Another time she might have a carbon monoxide detector with her wherever she goes to make sure that neither she nor anyone else would be harmed by any stray fumes. She knows that isn't normal and she knows they won't really keep her safe - probably - but she can't make herself let go of whatever the current one is. She can become extremely upset and potentially violent should someone attempt to take them away from her.

Background setting: [the setting your character came from before PC] She's been working in a small Mom and Pop type store in Canyon City, Oregon (population 669) for the past few years. Standard small town present-day America.
Physical description: [pictures are strongly encouraged & welcome] Rain is about 5'3 and rather slight of build. She has long black hair and dark eyes and looks actually a great deal like this.
Rain's 'House':
*It didn't look anything like a traditional house. Since she disliked walls so much it was mostly a transparent roof attached to a cut out section of a hill over a cleared out area. Beneath the ground were coils that would provide the necessary heat to keep her warm in the cold months to come. The roof had a defroster and a giant wiper blade and shade setting as well so she could enjoy the stars at night and keep the sun off during the day.
For extremely windy or rainy days Tony had included one wall made of the same transparent material as the roof that she could move around along a track on the outside of the roof so that she could be sheltered if necessary. There was furniture that Logan had made for and a few special things Tony had included that he would show her later. Religious and mythological symbols were worked into all the designs as well, anything and everything that could be protective.* From here.

Arthur and Rain
They said she had to go away and leave the City - no matter what. She had to leave the Library and her greenhouse and her little house built into the hill and all the places and things and people that had made her feel safe and special here.
Where would she go?
Rain had gotten a second backpack to put the rest of her special things in - the bird Tony had made for her and pictures of her house and some of the people she had known and seeds from as many of the plants as she could get - including the special rainbow one she'd gotten for helping out the City. And her books. The Library had given her two special ones - she knew they were for her to keep because her name had appeared in them in this very fancy writing with a Thank You and a fancy L for a signature.
She cried a little when she found the books there on her last day and had cried more when she had to say good bye to her greenhouse and even more when she had to leave her little house for the last time.
And now here she was, peeking through all the doors and hoping she'd find someplace that looked like she'd be happy or at least safe. But she didn't know how to tell. How could a peek through a door tell her what the people would be like or if she'd ever find a place to belong?
But still she had to go and time was running out, so she'd keep peeking and hope that something would happen to tell her which one to pick.

It was a beautiful sunny day, so Rain took advantage of it to wander out into the forest. It didn't take her long to reach the clearing by the river and wade out to one of the big rocks in the river. She set out a blanket there, in a curved spot of the rock just perfect for curling up in, and settled down with a book to enjoy the sun as long as it lasted.

Rain happened to have worked late at the Library yesterday, so when midnight struck and she turned into a deer, it didn't seem smart to try and head home. Not to mention that she couldn't manage the doorknobs with her hooves.
Anyone in the Library today may see a deer wandering about, continuing to stack books or pull ones that need to be held for someone. Feel free to come say hello or just boggle.

0176: Giving Thanks
I'm thankful for a lot of things this year.
I'm grateful for my greenhouse and the people who helped me make it - and the one who helped me save all the flowers in the snowstorm.
I'm grateful for my house in the woods and Drop.
I'm grateful for the Library - for my job and for it really liking me.
I'm grateful that there's a Tony back in the City.
And I'm grateful that I'm here and not home.
I'm grateful for my greenhouse and the people who helped me make it - and the one who helped me save all the flowers in the snowstorm.
I'm grateful for my house in the woods and Drop.

0175: Going to Hide
[Have a distressed Rain, practically in tears.]
I can't - I can't remember -
I don't - I keep getting lost here in the, the, the place where I work. With all the, the... the things you read.
And, oh, I know I used to remember all of this stuff and I just can't -
This is horrible!
I think maybe I just need to go and hide until this is all over.

0174: Too Scary
I started to come to the Library this afternoon, but people were sick everywhere and it was pretty scary, so I ran home.
I think it's safer here in my house in the woods, so I'm staying here till it's not so scary out there.

0173: 4th Wall Day
I don't really expect anyone I know to be here, but if anyone wants help finding things at the Library or wants to come see my beautiful greenhouse with pretty flowers and stuff, I'm happy to show you!
0172: Color is back!
I'm glad the colors are back. I really wasn't happy when they were gone.
Everything was just too sad.
I do wish my hair was all the starling color again. That was a lot of fun.
I still have lots of flowers in the greenhouse if anyone wants to see. It's up on the roof of the Library.

0171: Video
[At first glance, Rain's hair looks pretty much the same as always except perhaps a bit darker. However, when she moves it catches the light with the same sort of rainbowish colors against the black as a starling's wing. Rain is clearly delighted with it.]
Look at my hair! Isn't it beautiful? I look like a bird!
I washed it this morning just like always and this is what happened!
I have to go dance and watch it fly all over. Anyone want to join me?

0170 : [Accidental Video]
There's a deer up on the roof of the Library, nibbling on the plants, trying to stick to just the weeds.
Rain is going to be very unhappy when she shifts back to her own shape if she eats all of her flowers.

0169: Truth would be better...
I'm... not so very daring. Asking me for Truth would be much better.

0168: [Accidental Video]
[Rain's desperately trying to move all the hundreds of pots of plants she has all over the roof into the greenhouse. As the snow piles up she's had to resort to knwwling in it and digging down frantically to find what's remaining. She is... not particularly well dressed for this endeavor.]
Oh no! My flowers! I ran as fast as I could to get here, but they're all getting buried in the snow!

0167: [Accidental Video, Action]
[Rain's always looked much younger than she is. Which serves her well on the streets of Vegas. Not many people pay too much attention to, or worry much about a young, innocent looking street kid.
She wanders a bit, 'accidentally' bumping into someone here and there, always very apologetic, even as she divests them of their wallet or loose cash or even the odd bracelet or watch here and there. Her ability to hear what they're thinking and feel their emotions certainly helps her know when it's good to go for the score.
If she gets enough, she might be seen in one of the buffets at the casinos, though she doesn't look old enough to get into the casinos proper. People there might also later find themselves missing various things, but by then Rain will be long gone.]
[ooc: Feel free to bump into Rain, have something stolen, catch her stealing, police types are welcome to arrest her if they want... whatever!]
