He was so handsome and so kind. And when he stood up all straight like that, looking so strong and wise, it just made her feel happy and safe for the first time since she'd been told she had to leave the City.

Where did she want to go?

"I don't know," she said. "I don't have friends that I can go with. The Library was mostly my best friend. And my flowers. And my house."

Well, this was Rain. One couldn't expect her to be quite normal.

She sighed and ducked her head. "I wish I could just be with you."

It was such an unimaginable thing that it hadn't even occurred to her that she could go through the door to him - and even if she'd thought about it, she'd never have dared without an invitation. At most she thought this was some small apology from the City for kicking her out - letting her see the man she'd fallen in love with and had lost to his home.
