045: Mistletoe?

There seems to be mistletoe everywhere I turn - all over the library and even up on the roof! It's very pretty, but I know it definitely wasn't here yesterday!

Mat happened to wonder into the library and saw Rain. Smiling, he went over to her without noticing the mistletoe.

"Mat!" Rain said cheerfully and ran over to him, ending up right under a clump of misteltoe. "Oh, I'm so happy to see you!"

Still not noticing the mistletoe, he smiled and stopped in front of her. "Good to see you too." Then he bent down to kiss her as if he couldn't resist doing so.

Not that she would have ever objected anyway, but she wrapped her arms around him and kissed back with all of her heart.

He finally ended the kiss and looked up. "It happened again." He smiled at her. "I liked it this time though."

"What happened again?" she asked curiously. "You didn't like kissing me before?"

"There is a curse today. People who get under the mistletoe can't resist kissing the other person. You're the first person I've been happy to be cursed into kissing today."

"Oh," Rain said looking surprised. "You're the first person I've seen today."


"And... you're the only person I've ever kissed."

"Careful. I might start to feel special." He laughed and gave her another kiss. Just for good measure.

She smiled up at him after the kiss. "I already told you you were special. I can even let you feel it if you want."

"I'm alright." He looked around. "How is work today?"

"Very quiet," she said with a smile. "Just me and the books. And you now."

He let out another laugh then stepped out from under the mistletoe so he could control himself. "Any interesting books in here?"

"Oh gosh, tons of them," Rain said with a laugh. "Almost anything you could ever imagine!"

"I have a pretty good imagination." He gave her a silly grin then looked at one of the titles. "And it's been awhile since I last read anything."

"What might you like?" Rain asked. "I could find something for you."

She kind of wanted to tug him back under the misteltoe.

"Do you have a favorite?" Mat asked.

"I have lots of favorites. I like stories about myths and legends. There's a wonderful one that I like reading. From a world I never even heard of!" Rain smiled happily.

"Is it here? Maybe I'll read that one." He couldn't help but grin at the sight of her smiling.

She laughed. "If you take your hand away from that shelf I'll see if the Library will humor me and bring it here."

"Bring it here?" Still, he did as she asked and took his hand away from the shelf.

She gave him a quick kiss, then concentrated. After a moment she opened her eyes and beamed. "Right there, where you'd been looking before."

It was a very clearly different book. In fact the whole grouping on the shelves looked entirely different.

He stared at the shelf in confusion. That was...

"How did you do that?"

"I told you. The Library likes me." She was all but glowing with happiness. "It's kind of alive and it likes to move things around, but sometimes if you ask very nicely it will bring you what you want."

"It will?" He took the book off the shelf so he could look at it.

"It does for me," Rain said. "But it likes me. It sings to me sometimes when I'm here alone late at night. At least I think it does."

"I've never seen a library do this before." He laughed a little then nodded to the book. "I'll read this one."

Rain smiled. "I'm glad. I hope you enjoy it."

"Oh! Tony told me that I should be wearing some sort of fancy dress to the party." She looked more than a little worried. "I... I don't know if I can do that. He said he has one he had made to sort of experiment with some new fabric that he would like me to wear, but I think I'd look silly in something like that and people would laugh at me. So, he said to ask you to come see me in it and see what you said."

Mat almost choked. Tony. He hated Tony. And after that threat, he really hated Tony.

But, he smiled instead. "I wouldn't mind seeing you in it."

"I'll look foolish," she said glumly. "I know I will. Promise you won't laugh too much?"

"I don't think you'll look foolish at all. So I won't need to laugh."

She put her hands on her lips and looked up at him seriously. "Mat... Me? In a fairy tale dress? It's ridiculous."

"You'll look beautiful." He smiled but his eyes showed that he was serious too.

She tilted her head and looked at him, sensing his seriousness, but unsure why he would feel that way.

"You... you truly believe that."

"I do. I have since I met you."

She frowned, still looking at him seriously. "I... I suppose... Thank you."

He smiled then gave her another kiss. "You're welcome."

She smiled into the kiss. "I think sometimes that perhaps you are as crazy as I am."

"I know I'm crazy." He shrugged.

She looked worried and reached up to touch his cheek gently. "It's not a bad crazy. It's a very sweet crazy."

He blinked in surprise. "You think so?"

She nodded. "I do. I absolutely believe it."

"Thank you." He kissed her one more time. "I have someone I have to meet. I will see you later, Rain."

She nodded and smiled. "You can come see me whenever you wish."
