083: Tuesdays

I don't feel like working today. Not even in the Library. So I work a little bit and then come up and sit on the roof.

Which is what I'm doing now.

It's nice up here and I don't feel as guilty as I would if I just went home and wandered through the woods for the rest of today, which is what I'd really like to do.

Anybody want to distract me or spend the early evening in a woods wander?

I wonder if it would mind if I made a little garden up here. It's the only thing that's missing.

A few minutes later, Romana walks onto the roof.

"You're right, it's very beautiful up here."

Rain smiled at her from her she was sitting - probably waaay too close to the edge. "Hello, Romana!"

She returned the smile warmly. "You should be careful there, Rain. I imagine the fall would be quite deadly."

Choosing a spot close to Rain, but not quite so close the on the edge, Romana sat and looked around.

"You spend a lot of time up here, don't you?"

"What?" Rain looked down. "Oh. I suppose. Yes. Heights have never bothered me.

She smiled over at Romana. "Yes. I love it up here and I feel safe here."

Looking out over the City Romana answered, "I can see why, it's a wonderful view and very open."

Oh gosh, yes! But I think even if I read night and day for the rest of my life I'd never be able to read them all!

It's impossible to read an entire library's worth of books, unless you're immortal or something. Do you have a favorite?

Oh, I love all the myths and legends - especially Lakota ones, from my ancestors - but I'll read anything!

Myths and legends are really interesting to read about. I prefer the philosophical books myself. You're Lakota then?

Half. Half Lakota and half Guatemalan.

I... I don't understand a lot of the philosophy stuff. I'm just not that smart, I guess.

That's a mix there. Where did you grow up?

It's not about being smart or not, some of it is really confusing. Some philosophers works don't make sense to anyone, probably not even the person who wrote it.

Kind of everywhere. After my mother - after - my dad would drive from place to place and we'd stay maybe a few days or a few weeks if he found a job. Then we'd move on.

Mostly I lived on the streets. The shelters weren't always so safe.

Huh... I guess I don't feel so bad about it then.

Sounds a bit like my life, I spent some time in an orphanage and then some on the street. I won't ask about your mom if you don't want to talk about it.

You shouldn't let things like that make you feel bad.

When I was four.

I saw it, but I couldn't do anything.

And my father... he always said it was my fault and that I should have died instead.

But people here - well, they say he's wrong and I guess they're right.
