Had a weird dream last night about a place with a carousel and a clock thing and people, oh people like you never see for real but only for pretend. Woke up this morning and I was there. On my feet, walking like I'd already been up for a really long time.

Stopped when I realized what I was doing, tried to look around a little, but it was all really too much. Kind of overwhelming, you know?

So I found a place where I could sit and watch, try and get my bearings, but then I found I got to wondering.

Am I really here or am I dreaming and just lost in the dreamtime?

Maybe somebody will stop and tell me what's happened if I look small and innocent enough. Works in a lot of places.

"Generally in the course of our other activities, it gets done."

"Good," Rain said firmly. "I am glad."

"And yourself? What sort of activities do you engage in?"

"I... well... I travel mostly," Rain said slowly. "First with my dad and then running away from him. And I work at whatever odd jobs I can find. Waiting tables or things like that. A lot of them don't like me much, though. I can't keep most jobs too long."

"Perhaps you should try a different line of employment? Working in a bookstore for instance."

Her eyes widened. "Books," she breathed. "I love books. Do you think someone would let me work with them?"

"Why wouldn't they?"

"Because my brain is... kind of broken sometimes? And I'm weird?"

"Do you come from a land of horrendous insect people who try to eat each other as a way of greeting?"

"Gosh, nO!" Rain's eyes were wide with surprise.

"Good to know."

"Are there places like that?" she asked nervously.

"Probably." Tycho answered casually.

"Then you do not know for sure," Rain said firmly. "Were you just trying to frighten me more?"

"I've not been myself but they have to come from somewhere. And I certainly was not just trying to scare you! I was just trying to discern why you thought of yourself as 'weird'."

"Oh," she said quietly. "I am sorry. I... people think I am weird because I do not always understand the difference between what is real and what is not."

"My dear young lady. How do you know you're just privy to truths that others are ignorant of?"

"Because, sometimes I know they are not real?" Rain said cautiously. "But sometimes I do wonder if I am correct and they are not. But in my world... I do not think that is so."

Tycho seems unconvinced, but shrugs.

"You would know your own world better then I, for I suspect we are from diseparate realities. Though if it were me, I'd assume I was simply peering through the misty veil that falls between dimensions."

She smiled. "Misty veil. I like that."

"That would be a good stripper name now that I think of it... Not that I need one."

"Me neither," Rain said. "But I might be just Misty sometime. If I was feeling blue, you know?"

"It has a pleasant melancholy ring to it, yes."

Rain nodded and pulled a small notebook out of her backpack to write the name down. "So I remember," she explained.
