Had a weird dream last night about a place with a carousel and a clock thing and people, oh people like you never see for real but only for pretend. Woke up this morning and I was there. On my feet, walking like I'd already been up for a really long time.

Stopped when I realized what I was doing, tried to look around a little, but it was all really too much. Kind of overwhelming, you know?

So I found a place where I could sit and watch, try and get my bearings, but then I found I got to wondering.

Am I really here or am I dreaming and just lost in the dreamtime?

Maybe somebody will stop and tell me what's happened if I look small and innocent enough. Works in a lot of places.

Rain glanced in that direction then back at Gabe. He reminded her of someone, but she couldn't quite remember who. "Someone told me I had to find a place to stay. And that they don't make you pay right away. Do you believe that?"

"...I hadn't heard that," Gabe said. "Usually they make me pay. I know we have to pay for the office. IT's why we keep taking jobs from little old ladies with houses infested with... tentacle-beak things."

Rain held the battery tight and closed her eyes for a moment.

She opened them again and looked around. "Same. Drat. That tentacle-beak thing made me sure you were just in my dream."

"Beaks," Gabe said. "There were beaks. As in more than one. I had to punch it in those beaks. Several times.

"Did it go away?" Rain asked curiously

"Eventually," Gabe said. "Tycho helped. Tommy gun. And knowledge of various gods and devils and things man weren't meant to know." He turned and grinned. "I just punch what he tells me needs punching."

"Gonna need to do it a lot here," Rain said absently.

"Me, I just... help out here and there."

"Punching things?" Gabe said, excitedly, "You think?"

He remembered that they were probably still looking for work. And hey, he had cards!

"Well, if you need help with ancient gods or cursed artifacts, give us a call. I'm Jonathan Gabriel. Me and my partner Tycho Brahe run the Startling Developments Detective Agency."

He offered her a card.

Rain took the card and looked at it.

She hesitated, then reached into her pocket and pulled out her second spare extra-just-in case-the-other-two-got-lost battery and offered it to him. "Thanks. My name's Rain."

"Ahh. Good to meet you." He peered at the thing she was offering to him. "What's that? It looks like something Tycho's niece would know about."

"It's a battery. 'Case you -" She broke off, blushing. "Probably don't mean a thing for you."

"...Battery? I think I heard Anne Claire say something about... something... to do with... that..." he looked as though the process of remembering was giving him a headache.

Hey, 1920's boxer. Developments in portable electricity weren't high on his priorities.

And he got hit in the head a lot.

"Stupid," she said, ducking her head. "Nothing to put them in and since your brain isn't broken you don't need one."

"...I don't know, I get hit in the head a lot. Like... a lot a lot. By fists. And tentacles. Thank you for the... battery, right?"

"Yeah," Rain said quietly. "It kinda makes me feel better so.."

She shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe it'll make you feel better too."

"...Okay?" Gabe said, pocketing the battery. "Well, whatever helps? Maybe it's a talisman thing-y. I think Tycho has some in his office."

She laughed. "It is! It is! But not like a real magical one. Just one I sort of made up so I'm not always so scared."
