096: Just Rain?

I guess I have to think about things some more. Some people who are really important to me don't want to call me River because Rain is really important to them.

So maybe... maybe Rain is good enough. I have to think about it for a while.

He was leaning against the far wall of his cell, sitting on the cot, curled around himself.

"They're treating me better than I deserve."

[ooc: yeah, they changed my schedule...now I don't go in for 3 hours. meh.]

She sat on the floor outside his cell, watching him with concern.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I should have tried to do more to help you."

He raised his eyes to meet hers.

"Don't give me someone else to blame. This is my fault."

"I know," she said softly. "I just wish..."

"But it's done and now we just have to figure out what comes next."

"Don't wish. Faeries come if you wish."

Thomas laid down on the cot. It was lumpy, and uncomfortable. Probably just what he deserved.

"They never come for me when I wish." She looked around his cell. "At least you have a little window. You can watch the stars."

He opened his eyes and looked towards the window.

"They feel like they're glaring at me."

She shook her head. "No, Thomas. The stars are mine. They watch over you and keep you safe. That's where my mother is."

"The stars...keep me safe..." his detached comment was spoken nearly under his breath, more to himself than to Rain.

"My stars will," she said firmly. "And if you watch them too I'll know and part of me will be here with you."

"Never had someone watching over me before...not since....but she's gone."

"I will," she said quietly. "You know I will."

"For how long," he said, his tone hard. "How long until you realize I'm not worth it?"

"Forever," she said softly. "For always. I know you. And I care about you, no matter what you do. I... I'm very sad about what you did, but I know that you're good inside. And that you'll learn to fight him. And I know he's not you because I can hear both of you. You're not the same."

"He's strong, Rain. I'm not."

"Then we'll help you be strong again." Her voice was quiet, but had no trace of hesitation or doubt. "The skinwalker took that away from you. But he didn't take you. He just hurt you so bad that you lost yourself."

He winced at the name. Hell, it wasn't even what it was actually called...but just mentioning it sent phantom pain throughout his body. He started to shake, and he slammed his eyes shut.

He started to growl, and it was an inhuman sound.

Rain just sat quietly, trying to project as much calm and love and safety as she could. She was getting much better at it. She could almost make everyone feel it if she worked hard enough.

And she was certainly trying her hardest.

His tension subsided slowly, but it did. He just sunk back against the wall, defeated.

"What can I do to help?" she asked softly. "I could sing to you or tell you a story or... just sit here and be with you so you know you're not alone."

"Just...don't leave, okay?" He looked down. "You have to. Visiting hours and stuff."

"I'll be here as often as they let me," she said quietly. "And if I'm very good maybe sometimes they'll let me stay later."

"But even if they make me go..." She nodded at the window. "Watch and you'll know I'm there."

He followed her gaze and nodded. "Okay."

"Thomas..." Rain hesitated. "If you need anything... Anything at all..."

"Call you. I get it."
