030: Shhh!

Yesterday was a lot of fun. Today I'm just having a quiet day working in the Library. Anyone I talked to yesterday about coming to visit or who wants to is more than welcome. I think after work I may go sit up on the roof for a while. I like being high up.

"I'm bloody lucky. The possibility of rolling these as the same roll twenty times in a row is flaming unlikely." But, he started rolling the dice and every time the same two numbers appears. Toss after toss. After twenty, he let the dice rest where they landed.

"The more random the chances are, the greater my luck is."

Rain thought about that for a moment. "That must come in really handy," she said.

"It can. But mix it with hundreds of years of memories that aren't mine," he pointed to his head, "and it can get complicated."

She looked at him curiously. "How do you have memories that aren't yours?"

He sighed and studied his dice. "They were put in my head. I asked to have the holes in my memories filled and got these bloody memories instead."

She reached out to touch his head gently. "That must be terrible. I wish there was something I could do to help."

Looking up, he smiled at her. He could only think of one thing to say that. "Thank you, Rain."

She smiled shyly and withdrew her hand. "You're welcome."

"Nice people like you are hard to come by." He laughed to himself and pocketed the dice. "Have you ever watched someone juggle?"

She shook her head. "I don't think so."

He grinned as he pulled three brightly colored balls out of his coat. Tossing them into the air, he began simple circle patterns that became more complicated as he went.

Rain watched, eyes wide, then began to smile and eventually to laugh delightedly. "Oh, Mat! That's wonderful!"

Moving the juggling to one hand, he grabbed a couple more of the balls from his pocket then added them into the mix. "A friend of mine taught me. I never stopped."

It was so amazing she could barely catch her breath. She clasped her hands together, watching him in fascination.

He grinned and finally ended his performance. "Did you enjoy that?"

"Oh yes!" she breathed. "Mat, it was... it was beautiful. I've never seen anything like it before!"

"You should see Thom do it. He's far better at it than I am." He laughed as he held them out for her. "Want me to teach you a couple tricks?"

She reached out for them, then pulled her hands back. "Oh, I'm sure I wouldn't be any good."

"You should have seen me when I first tried. I was bloody terrible. Come on, I'll show you." He nodded for her to take the three he was holding out for her.

She looked at him searchingly, then slowly took them. "All right."

Getting up, he moved behind her and placed a hand on either of hers. "We'll start slow so you can get used to it." He took one of the three and put it on her lap. "Ready?"

She stiffened when he touched her, surrounding her from behind, then forced herself to relax. "I guess, yes."

"It's alright. I won't hurt you. I give my word." He didn't know if she was accidentally listening again but he never went back on his word once he gave it. Moving her hands with his, he helped her get the two balls moving around in a slow circle.

She liked the feel of him there, warm against her back, and she knew he wouldn't hurt her, sensed it there. And felt safe.

Which let her relax enough to juggle the balls. She wasn't nearly as uncoordinated as she feared.

He took his hands away then to let her keep juggling them on her own. But, he didn't move from behind her.

"There. You've got it now."
