I guess I have to think about things some more. Some people who are really important to me don't want to call me River because Rain is really important to them.

So maybe... maybe Rain is good enough. I have to think about it for a while.

Rain, have you ever ridden a horse before?

I think it is. Thank you for being that part for me.

A horse?

Me?

Gosh no!

Would you like to?

Yes. Yes, I would.

Alright. I brought a horse over here from the stables. We can go for a ride through the forest when you get here.

You...? Mat?

Oh, I'm hurrying now!

We're not going anywhere.

But a horse! A real live horse!

She's a beauty too.

And this would be Rain, running through the woods, laughing delightedly as she saw the horse outside the house. "Oh, Mat!"

Turning, he grinned at her. The brush he was using on the rich brown coat never stopped moving as he nodded to her in greeting. "Come closer. She's gentle."

Rain sidled closer, behind Mat to peek at the horse. "She's so big!"

She smiled up at him, arms around him from behind, leaning into him and peering around. "What's her name?"

"She doesn't have one yet. I was hoping you'd help me pick one." Mat smiled at her over his shoulder and kissed the top of her head. Taking her hand, he guided her over so she could pet the horse's nose.

"It's soft, see?"

Rain sucked in a breath. "Oh Mat! So soft!"

She slid a little further out from behind him, growing more daring as she stroked the horse's nose. "She's beautiful!"

The horse sniffed at her hand and he pulled a piece of carrot from his pocket. It was gone seconds later with several loud crunches.

"She likes you."

Rain's eyes were huge. "Mat...!"

Mat laughed and pulled another piece from his pocket. "Would you like to try feeding her a treat?"

Rain looked up at him nervously. "She won't bite?"

Mat smiled. "Here." He gently took her hand in his and placed the carrot in it. "Keep your hand flat while she grabs it. She won't bite you." Moving in behind Rain, he guided her hand out.

"Keep it flat." The horse looked over and finally took the carrot. "There. That wasn't so bad, was it?"

"Oh, Mat, it was wonderful!" Rain turned to smile up at him. "She does! She likes me, I think!"

"Of course she does." He laughed. "Just let me know when you'd like to try riding her."

She bit her lip and smiled up at him. "Is now too soon?"

He grinned and shook his head. "It's not."

Now he moved her over to the side of the horse. "I'll help you up then sit behind you. Jump when I tell you to." Placing strong hands on her waist, he got ready. "And...jump." He waited until he was sure she was settled on the horse's back before jumping on behind her. One arm wrapped around her as the other grabbed the reins.

A couple clicks and he had the horse walking along.

One hand held onto the arm around her waist while the other stroked the horse's coat. "It's amazing!"

"We ride horses all the time where I'm from. Every land has horses. My da taught me all about these animals." The ride was smooth since he understood how to guide the horse around rougher terrain.
