096: Just Rain?

I guess I have to think about things some more. Some people who are really important to me don't want to call me River because Rain is really important to them.

So maybe... maybe Rain is good enough. I have to think about it for a while.

Mat smiled. "Here." He gently took her hand in his and placed the carrot in it. "Keep your hand flat while she grabs it. She won't bite you." Moving in behind Rain, he guided her hand out.

"Keep it flat." The horse looked over and finally took the carrot. "There. That wasn't so bad, was it?"

"Oh, Mat, it was wonderful!" Rain turned to smile up at him. "She does! She likes me, I think!"

"Of course she does." He laughed. "Just let me know when you'd like to try riding her."

She bit her lip and smiled up at him. "Is now too soon?"

He grinned and shook his head. "It's not."

Now he moved her over to the side of the horse. "I'll help you up then sit behind you. Jump when I tell you to." Placing strong hands on her waist, he got ready. "And...jump." He waited until he was sure she was settled on the horse's back before jumping on behind her. One arm wrapped around her as the other grabbed the reins.

A couple clicks and he had the horse walking along.

One hand held onto the arm around her waist while the other stroked the horse's coat. "It's amazing!"

"We ride horses all the time where I'm from. Every land has horses. My da taught me all about these animals." The ride was smooth since he understood how to guide the horse around rougher terrain.

She leaned back against him, feeling perfectly safe with his arm around her. "I think I'd like your da."

Mat laughed as he guided the horse towards the river so they could travel alongside it. "My da was always scolding me for how lazy I was. But he's a good man."

Rain giggled. "Well... you can be sometimes."

"Light! I've been caught again!" He laughed.

Rain turned enough to smile into his eyes. "I still think you're wonderful, though!"

Taking the chance given here, he kissed her. "I'm just plain ol' Mat."

She kissed back. "Plain and wonderful."

"Alright then. I'll be wonderful if you will be too."

Rain considered that for a moment, smiling, then nodded. "We'll be wonderful together."

"Well good for us." He laughed and clicked again to keep the horse from getting too close to the edge of the river.

She snuggled back into him and let herself enjoy the ride. It was wonderful and exciting and at the same time felt so natural. "I like this so much," she murmured happily.

"We'll have to name her so we can keep her around then. That way we can do this more often." He held her close as he gently guided the horse along.

She turned again. "We can keep her?"

He smiled and shrugged. "I don't see why we can't. I did pay for her already."

She nearly fell off the horse turning around to see him. "Mat! A horse must cost an awful lot of money!"

"Good horses are always worth the price." Besides, he knew he had the money. Mat tightened his grip on her a little more to keep her from falling as he laughed at her reaction.

She scrambled back around, letting him steady her. "So what are you going to name her?"

"I don't know. You'll have to help me." He shifted her a little so that way she was balanced again.
