Yesterday was a lot of fun. Today I'm just having a quiet day working in the Library. Anyone I talked to yesterday about coming to visit or who wants to is more than welcome. I think after work I may go sit up on the roof for a while. I like being high up.

He let out a sigh. "A war."

"Oh," she said quietly and reached out to touch his arm gently. "I'm so sorry."

"If I could be, I'd just be a simple gambler. Or maybe a farmer like my da." He touched the silver medallion hanging around his neck. "It's not that easy though."

She looked at the medallion curiously, then looked up at him, the tips of her fingers still resting on his arm. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

He smiled at her. "No. There's nothing that can be done from here." Mat nodded to indicate they should sit before he does so.

"What is it like where you live, Rain?"

She sat gracefully next to him. "I, well... I don't come from any particular place. I... my father traveled from place to place. We lived in the car when he had one or, more usually on the streets or in a shelter."

"So your home was the world." He smiled again. "Did you like it? Not having one place to be settled in?"

She looked away, out over the City. "No. It was... hard. And frightening."

[ooc: And I'm off to dinner with friends, back in a bit.]

He nodded as he watched her. "I know what that's like. I haven't really been settled in a place I can call home for a few years now."

"I like having a home," she said softly. "A place where I belong. I never had that before."

"I'm glad you have that here." He looked away. "It took some getting used to but sometimes I like it too. When I'm not thinking about what's happening with my friends back home."

"I'm sorry," she said again. "That must be so hard. I... don't have anyone back home, so that makes it easier."

He smiled over at her. "You're really bloody nice. I like that."

"Me?" She blushed again. "I just... I wish I could help everyone. But most of the time I can't."

His smile grew. "I knew it. You are very beautiful when you blush. I have a good view of it now."

Which only made her blush more. "Thank you, I think. I'm not used to people saying things like that."

Mat stared at her. Rain was one of the prettiest girls he'd ever come across and she wasn't used to that? "You aren't?"

She shook her head. "Most people didn't like me at all. 'Cause I'm different. And I can't be one of the prettiest girls you've seen. I'm... not."

He blinked. Had he said that out loud? Not that he could think of. "Can you read my mind?"

She went completely white and started up on her knees. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean - I just wasn't paying attention and I swear I'll try really hard not to do it again!"

He blinked again. "I...It...It's alright, Rain. That's something I'm getting used to here. But," he studied the people below as he tried to keep a jumble of memories down, "it might be better for you to stay out of my head. I'm not even sure if it's good for me to be in my own bloody head sometimes."

"I don't want to be in anyone's head," she said, too embarrassed even to look at him. "And I understand if you want to leave and not talk to me anymore."

Now, he just stared at her in confusion. "Why would I leave when you didn't mean to?"

"Because it's bad and wrong."

"Accidents happen. I'm not bloody well blaming you." He bent his head down to look up into her face. "I won't leave."
